The battlestar arrives too late; a handful of humans survive the genocidal onslaught. The battlestar fleet, including Adar's flagship, Atlantia , is destroyed, save Galactica , the sole surviving battlestar from the attack. Adama sends out word to all the survivors to take whatever space going vessel they can find and rendezvous with Galactica.
Together, Galactica and other Colonial ships leave Colonial space in search of Earth, the mythic home of the Thirteenth Tribe. While initially believed to be the only battlestar to survive the Destruction of the Twelve Colonies , the battlestar Pegasus is found, but soon disappears in a pyrrhic mission The Living Legend, Part II.
The ship is divided in to decks and sections designated with Greek letters. During " Fire in Space " the fire is initially out of control on alpha deck, in beta and gamma sections. Dialogue indicates that solium storage is located in or near gamma section. Sections are divided into compartments, with as many as 43 compartments in a section. The Venator Class Destroyer serves primarily as an escort ship for their larger Conqueror class brethren. Their primary function is to screen an attack force and help defend against enemy fighters.
Outside of the fleet they are also used as patrol vessels to police the space lanes between Alliance worlds because of their superior sublight speed and maneuverability. It is rumored that two Venator class ships have recently defected to the Free Worlds League, a resistance group within the Alliance, but Alliance High Command continues to deny it.
The Viper Mark 7 is the latest in a long series of sucessful Space Superiority fighters. Designed and manufactured by G. Defense Industries Inc. With the Cylon War fresh in the minds of the Admiralty, they asked for a fighter that could conceivablly out perform a Cylon counterpart and while they are satisfied with the Mark 7, rumors abound that the Mark 8 is already in the planning stages. Each Squadron is commanded by a senior Captain while the entire Prometheus Air Group is commanded by a Major who reports directly to the X.
The Raptor is the workhorse of the Colonial Fleet. Used to transport troops and as scouts for the fleet, Raptor pilots are some of the most well known members of the Colonial Armed Forces.
Most Capital Ships are assigned at least one Raptor to act as a transport for the ship's commanding officer thus sparing the use of the much larger shuttles used to ferry large numbers of people back and forth. The Scimitar Bomber is a modification of the Raptor design. They work as both ground assault and space assault vehicles. On the ground they are used to bomb targets and provide ground support to land based troops.
In space, they are used to attack weapons emplacements on capital ships and destroy enemy fighter facilities i. Landing and Launching bays. Being relatively new to the fleet, the Scimitar Bomber isn't seen by many eyes. Only ten full squadrons have been fielded, the Prometheus Squadron being the latest. Mercury class Battlestars carry 28 and also 4 mounted forward heavy cannons. Colonial Viper The Vipers are launched from a long tube in one of a Battlestar's landing bays, assisted by a powered catapult mechanism.
It appears that a Battlestar can launch at least sixteen Vipers from each bay at once. Vipers are loaded into the launch tubes atop rails which engage recesses in the bottom of the fuselage between the lower wings.
The rail system ensures that the Viper remains on the centerline of the launch tube. Vipers typically use all three of their engines for powered flight, and can use a "Turbo" boost for greater speed, analogous to a modern fighter plane's afterburner. A pilot can turn on or off each engine by a push button, as seen in the startup sequence anytime a Viper is preparing to take off. Vipers can also reverse thrust for rapid deceleration, a useful tactic when being pursued by enemy ships that would then tend to overshoot the Viper, placing them in a vulnerable position.
Vipers are capable of atmospheric as well as space flight, and can land and take off from a planetary surface. Viper engines are designed to collect commonly occurring gases in planetary atmospheres and in space to power the ship's fusion reactor.
Vipers are also capable of supporting the pilot for up to two weeks in a form of "suspended animation" for extremely long missions. The main flight control of a Viper is a three buttoned joystick, similar to a jet fighter. The IM button is the reverse thruster. Armament consist of two directed energy weapons referred to as "lasers" and "laser torpedoes" that are linked together to fire simultaneously.
The crew responds with overwhelming support. As the computer systems are brought back online by Ministry of Defense officer Kendra Shaw , she discovers that the Command Navigation Program contains a backdoor, allowing access to the computer network. With repairs complete, Pegasus begins her attacks on what is thought to be a small communications relay. The Vipers are quickly outnumbered, and are unable to proceed as planned. Cain orders the reserves launched, however executive officer Colonel Jurgen Belzen hesitates and proposes to retreat in order to form a new plan.
A now furious Cain calls for Belzen's sidearm, and summarily executes him on the spot for refusing to carry out orders, much to the shock and horror of the CIC staff present. As the battle continues, Cain calls up her second officer, Lieutenant Colonel Jack Fisk , to launch the reserves. Still in shock, he calls for the launch. The battle does not proceed well, with the Cylons soon gaining access to the ship via the flight pods.
As the boarding parties fight their way into the ship, officer Shaw discovers a woman in white who looks exactly like Gina Inviere walking the corridors.
Determining that she is not a Pegasus officer or crewman, she guns the woman down, and then makes her way back to the CIC, where she finds Inviere next to Cain. Shaw determines that she is Cylon in nature, and moves to apprehend her.
As she sees her double on a security feed, she kills three marines before she is knocked unconscious and removed from the CIC. While Pegasus is able to destroy the relay, the battle was pyrrhic at best, with heavy Colonial losses. At this point, nearly crewmen have been killed, with injured. Losses are further compounded by the tally of Vipers lost or damaged in the battle, with half the air wing suffering damage. The battle takes an insurmountable toll on the crew, and the communications relay would be the first and last Cylon target Pegasus strikes on its own TRS : " Razor ".
Following the conclusion of the battle at the Communications Relay, Cain begins the interrogation of Inviere, using whatever methods necessary. Considered now to be nothing more than an emotionless machine, certain members of the crew, led by Lieutenant Alastair Thorne begin assaulting and raping the prisoner. Thorne is essential in saving the lives of many Pegasus officers and crew, most of whom line up behind him in support of torturing the Cylon prisoner TRS : " Razor ".
Pegasus encounters a small fleet of fifteen civilian ships, found about a week after the Fall of the Twelve Colonies. Admiral Cain uses them as a source of spare parts, deciding that the military needs of Pegasus take priority over the survival of the civilians.
Cain also reviews the ships' passenger lists and draws up a list of valuable selectees, people such as aeronautical engineer Peter Laird , to forcibly draft into its crew. However, some are with their families and refuse to leave them. Facing an uprising aboard the civilian transport Scylla that spreads to the other ships, Admiral Cain orders Colonel Fisk to shoot the families of any who resist. When the angry crowd grows violent, Lieutenant Kendra Shaw and her Marines carry out the order, killing ten people and cowing the rest into submission.
The civilian ships are stripped of useful items, including their FTL drives, and are left to their fate as Pegasus resumes its campaign of hit-and-run attacks against the Cylons " Razor ", " Resurrection Ship, Part I ".
Months after the attacks, Pegasus is still tracking a large Cylon fleet jumping from system to system with natural resources. When Pegasus jumps ahead to the Cylon's next projected position, it detects a large fleet.
